German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine released a new interview of Patrick Dempsey. He talks about skin care for men, his love for Porsche and his love for his children and how he wants to be there for them. You can read the translation below.
“My wife showed me how to take care of my skin properly”
Sexiest Man Alive, actor, racing driver and also model: in an interview, Patrick Dempsey talks about getting older, the right facial care for men, his love for Porsche and why he cares about his children.
Mr. Dempsey, it took a long time, but last year it was time. The magazine People has named you the Sexiest Man Alive 2023, at the age of 57.
It’s okay that I had to wait so long. You can’t take this too seriously. But it’s nice to get attention now and use it positively.
Do you already have an idea who could become your successor?
I myself have no idea who could become the next sexiest man alive after me. But my children keep lists.
Is it true that they tease you because of the title?
They make jokes that Jacob Elordi or Pedro Pascal deserve it more than I do. I then say: “Yes, you are right.” My boys are funny guys. They want to make life a little difficult for their dad. But I think deep inside them they are happy that I was able to experience this recognition.
Your wife Jillian Fink is a successful make-up artist. What role did she have in you getting the title?
A big one. My wife showed me how to properly care for my skin. There are more and more men dealing with the issue. Jillian sells her own care products. And a large part of the sales are eye masks and hair products for men.
On Instagram and Tiktok, you present these care products together with your wife. Do you see yourself as a role model for other men when it comes to skin care?
First and foremost, it is fun to spend time together in this way, and so I can support my wife. It seems like people like our clips. But I don’t see myself as a role model. I still have a lot to learn.
What does your daily facial care routine look like?
After getting up and in the evening, I treat my face with warm steam. Then I rinse it and use a moisturizer for my eye areas. I don’t want to waste a lot of time getting ready in the morning. I prefer products that are easy to apply and that I can take with me when traveling.
Are there any small things that men often overlook in their care?
I think women – or people in general – look to see if you take care of your nails. You should always make sure that you have clean nails. And of course clean skin. If you have crazy eyebrows that look like they’re about to blow away, you should trim them. My wife does it for me.
It is known that you have a passion for the car manufacturer Porsche. Where does this special preference come from?
In the late seventies, I was in a camp for young motorsports fans. I must have been twelve or 13 years old. My roommate had a poster of a Porsche Turbo hanging over his bed. When I was lying in my bed, I looked at this car. We imagined what fun it would be to own this car. This was the first time I fell in love with a Porsche.
You bought your first Porsche, a 356 Cabriolet, made in 1963, as a young man with the salary of the film Can’t Buy Me Love. How did you come across the car?
Every time I drove past this one street on my way home to my house in Santa Monica, I saw this Porsche classic car with the sales sign. And I said to myself: “God, I would really like this car.” Finally, I dialled the number on the sign, and a woman was on the other end. It was the sound engineer of the film Top Gun.
So a woman who is familiar with good engine sounds.
I asked if I could test drive the car. She said, “Sure, come over.” I drove the car to a mechanic. The man had worked for Porsche in Germany and set up a workshop in the United States. He told me that everything was perfect and what deal I should suggest to the saleswoman. She accepted my offer. I still have the car today.
Are you busy getting older?
Sure, my body is changing. My eyesight is decreasing, for example. That’s why I’m wearing glasses now. It’s nice if you can have a say in the design of the glasses, as I do now with the collection for Porsche Design. It is also much more difficult for me to recover after a hard workout. If you fall down while skiing or cycling, you need a longer break. I stopped drinking seven years ago. I think this is the healthiest thing I’ve ever done. I feel much better physically because of it. The latest studies show how harmful alcohol is. I would like to spend a lot of time with my children on this earth.
Your new phase in life also includes that your children will move out at some point. Your daughter is 22 years old, your twins, two boys, are 17. How do you deal with it as a father?
We are slowly getting to this point. The boys go to school for another year. Then they will attend university. It’s just nice to have them still in the house. I also travel less to be with them. Not because they really need me. But last night, for example, it was good that I was there. My wife is currently taking care of her mother in another state. A storm came up outside and my son wanted to go climbing. I said to him: “Listen, you know you can’t go out now.”
If you hadn’t been there, he might have put himself in danger.
Maybe he would have decided otherwise. You have to be there for your children and create a stable foundation for them. But you can’t stop them from going on their own adventures and experiences either. I got used to having a big family around me. It will be sad if this is no longer the case. But the housing market in California is quite difficult. I think they will move in with us again, and we will need a bigger house.
As we speak, a severe storm is moving over California. Is environmental awareness important to you?
I fear for the future of my children. The topic affects us worldwide. There is no escape and it influences us on so many levels. We are experiencing inflation and immensely high cost of living. Then there are the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. In America, we are in an election year. And the rise of nationalism and fascism is really scary.
Donald Trump could become president again.
That’s why we have to vote. I hope that the courts maintain the rule of law. I didn’t realize how fragile democracy is and how important it is that we all fight for it. Because we know what the alternative will be.
