Dexter: Original Sin – Who is Aaron Spencer?

As one of the new characters in Dexter: Original Sin there are few details about who Patrick Dempsey’s character, Aaron Spencer, is. Here is what we know.

Over the last few months, various sources have given us details about Aaron Spencer that help us get a global idea of who he is. So, what do we know exactly?

• He is the 50-year-old Captain of the Miami Metro Homicide and has a decades-long relationship with Harry Morgan. They are best friends “and there’s a brotherhood there that goes back to the beginning of their careers. They’ve come up together. Aaron turns to Harry because he trusts him the most.”
• He has a lot of respect within the group because of his wisdom and his humility.
• He has an ex-wife called Rebecca and a son called Nicky.
• His priority is to assemble a top-notch team to investigate the abduction of a prominent Judge’s son. Dexter will be very observant of his approach to dispensing justice when faced with a deeply personal crisis. Patrick explains “he’s known Dexter since he’s very little, he’s seen him grow up. My job is to figure out what’s going on as the detective, and oversee what the detectives are doing.”

In his interview with Entertainment Weekly, Patrick Dempsey how the look for the character came to be: “I have to tell you, it was discovered accidentally,” […] “I was on holiday and I hadn’t shaved in a while. I shaved my beard off because we were getting ready to come home and I kept the mustache going, thinking, ‘Maybe I should do this,’ because I was looking at a lot of vintage training videos of Miami police in the ’70s and they all had mustaches. And then my hair was long and I slicked it back and I sent the picture to makeup and hair and they loved the idea, and that’s how it started.”
The actor goes on explaining that he appreciates the opportunity to physically transform: “This is what I’m looking for, to do something where I’m able to physically transform,” […] “I’ve been fortunate enough to have a good long career and create a character that is beloved, so it’s nice to have an opportunity to come in and [do something totally different]. Hopefully the fans will embrace this character — I think it helps, changing the look, so that people will look twice and go, ‘Oh wait, what’s going on here?'”

Whether the show will be renewed for a second season is still unknown but if it is, we may not see Aaron Spencer again. In fact, Patrick says “I’ve only signed on for one year, so who knows?” […] “I love being on the show, but you never know what could happen.”
