Patrick Dempsey’s Sexy Year: Interview with People Magazine

Sexiest Man Alive 2024 will be announced on November 12th so ahead of the big reveal People caught up with Patrick Dempsey who won the title last year.

It’s almost time to announce 2024’s Sexiest Man Alive. Do you have any advice for the next in line?

It’s really good for one’s ego, but it’s so subjective. You take it seriously enough to be grateful, but don’t take it too seriously. It’s a great group of people to be a part of.

Did you get to use the title of Sexiest Man Alive to your advantage in any way?

No, it makes me more anxiety-ridden. [Laughs] I needed to stay in shape, to train more. But it’s amazing the reach it has. I think it’s a tre- mendous platform to do something positive with. . . . It’s allowed me to talk about the Dempsey Center [the cancer-care facility in Maine he founded]. Fame in itself is quite empty, but if you can be of service, that is truly what life is about and gives you meaning and joy.

What’s dad life like these days? Your daughter Talula is 22, and your twin sons Darby and Sullivan, 17, are getting ready for college.

My youngest kids are in their senior year. It’s exciting to see them going through that process. It’s a different chapter, so I’m very grateful for every- thing that’s happened. It goes by very quickly.

You have an exciting TV series arriving in December—the prequel Dexter: Original Sin.

I’ve had a great time working on it. Christian Slater and I worked together 30 years ago, and it’s so great to be working with him. And [after two Hollywood strikes] I’m just really grateful to have a job.

How does the show connect to the original?

Michael C. Hall [who played Dexter] is doing all the voice-over, so there’s continuity. It’s a dier- ent character for me to play. It takes place in the early ’90s and the ’70s, so that’s quite fun. I think fans of the original will really love where we begin. [The show has] also allowed me to continue my racing, which keeps me in shape.

Scream 7 was green-lit, with Neve Campbell set to return. In the franchise she is married to your Scream 3 character Mark Kincaid. Would you ever come back?

Well, they’ve been talking to me about it, and I think they’re still working on the script. In this business you never know what’s going to happen. But if the opportunity opens itself up and it becomes a reality, I’ll definitely take it seriously.

You founded the Dempsey Center almost 17 years ago. What do you hope to share about cancer care?

My mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the late ’90s. She had more than 12 recur- rences over 17 years and passed away in 2014. That really woke me up to the impact it has on a family. We need to be able to talk about this openly without any shame. It’s also about getting the word out about getting you.
