In a new interview, Patrick Dempsey shares his love for motorsports and why it is not just a passion but also a way of life.
For Patrick Dempsey motorsports is not just a passion, but a way of life
Life has no road map. If it did, we imagine that it would probably be drawn by Patrick Dempsey. After becoming one of cinema’s biggest on-screen heartthrobs throughout his 20s and 30s (no mean feat!), he then decided to try his hand at being a race-car driver, and subsequently finished on the podium at Le Mans, one of the world’s most gruelling endurance races. So you next decided to become co-owner of a racing-team. Now you’re in your fifties, still racing a bit, still landing major film roles (Michael Mann’s Ferrari movie, anyone?), and the enduring face – and wrist – of the watch world’s most relevant motor racing brand, TAG Heuer. It’s a road map that we’d all be lucky to be on, so Esquire caught up with Patrick Dempsey to ask for directions.
What is it about motor racing that seems to captivate leading men in Hollywood?
I think that a lot of people, no matter what their employment may be, are passionate about motorsports. When you are a celebrity and actor, it definitely brings a lot of visibility to the sport.
How has your passion for motorsports evolved over the years? Is it something you’ve always felt connected to, or did it become more meaningful as you grew older?
I have always felt connected to motorsports ever since I was a child. I appreciate every moment at the track as I get older. I am very grateful to have the opportunity to still race at this age (59).
Many men in the latter half of their careers turn to new hobbies or challenges. How do you think racing fits into that narrative of seeking adventure or purpose?
Racing gives you both a reason to work out and stay disciplined—physically, emotionally, and mentally. I find it to be really great for my well-being. When I work out, I am stronger and faster in the car. Racing at this age is a great way for me to keep in shape, have purpose, and seek adventure. It really motivates me to work out every day.
Is there something in motorsports that speaks to a desire for speed, risk, freedom, or control?
Control and being in control are extremely important in racing. You will not be very successful in this sport if you are out of control.
From your experience, what do you think racing teaches men about themselves?
I think racing teaches not only men but women racers as well to get to know themselves in ways they normally wouldn’t. It shows you how far you can push yourself beyond your comfort zone.
Racing demands both physical and mental resilience. How does this challenge influence or echo your perspective on life, health, and gratitude?
The challenge of racing affects every aspect of life—skills, experiences, and lessons learned. Racing has made me a better person overall.
For a keen racing enthusiast, being TAG Heuer’s ambassador as it enters the next chapter of sponsorship for Formula 1 must feel like a huge privilege. Is there one timepiece from this year’s novelties that really speaks to you, and why?
The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronosprint x Porsche Rallye was one of my favourites. Its design perfectly blends the spirit of motorsport with a touch of elegance, capturing the essence of speed and performance. It embodies motorsport heritage with its unique chronograph, inspired by the acceleration of the Porsche 911. It’s a watch that not only looks incredible but also represents the strong connection between TAG Heuer and Porsche’s racing legacy. This watch is more than just a timekeeper—it tells a story of motorsport heritage and innovation.
Looking back, do you think your motorsport experience and interest in racing have impacted how you approach your career, personal challenges, or even relationships?
Motorsports has certainly affected all aspects of my life in different ways. I believe it has given me more patience, drive, and determination to be the best I can be in my career, personal challenges, and relationships. It teaches you many values that I practice every day in life.
